If you’re a parent, you probably get that there are several training toothpastes around. You may also understand that most toothpaste has fluoride in them. Did you know that training toothpastes don’t? This is because children who are exposed to too much fluoride can often develop a condition called fluorosis.
To a degree, it may be helpful for your child to be exposed to fluoride. Fluoride treatments, food and water with fluoride can be healthy in certain doses in strengthening tooth enamel and preventing cavities. However, while one’s teeth are still developing, those teeth can develop white lines or spots in their teeth that look different than the rest of their smile. In extreme cases, fluorosis can result in brown spots on the teeth and cracked enamel. This can be embarrassing, but except for the extreme cases, it is not harmful.
If your child is just starting to use fluoride toothpaste, make sure that they are spitting their toothpaste out instead of swallowing it.
